Invitation

Who doesn’t jump at the chance to be included on the invite list of that special party everyone is talking about?  If we find out through the grapevine that we were left off the list, it causes us worry and even a little jealousy. My husband and I used to have an annual “after tax season” party, with a different and fun theme each year.  We would be so excited to mail out our handwritten invitations to those we wanted to share in our celebration, and requested they reply to the usual R.S.V.P.  It was always difficult to get replies in a timely fashion, which would allow us to plan on how much food and drink to purchase for the party.   I remember one particular time I needed to reach out by phone to a few invitees to get a confirmation if they would be attending.  When I asked one of the invited guests if they would be able to attend, he replied, “Yes, I saw the invitation.  What is that all about?”  Well, you’re probably laughing or rolling your eyes over that answer.  How often, though, do we not know what to do with the invitation Jesus is sending our way? He is always extending an invitation to his feast every day.  Some of us may not notice that His invitation is even sitting there, just waiting for us to open the envelope.  Or maybe we set it aside, thinking we have more time to R.S.V.P. before the deadline.  I must admit, I was a little insulted that some didn’t respond, and also disappointed they missed the opportunity to join us for a fun celebration.  So, if something so insignificant as me not getting an R.S.V.P. to our party is upsetting, how sad does it make our Lord feel when we fail to respond to His invitation with a big YES!   I invite you, this week, to spend some time in prayer, thinking about how we can better respond to Jesus’ personal invitation.   Maybe we need to ask ourselves some hard questions.  Are we saying YES without hesitation?   What are the things that are holding you and me back from accepting Jesus’ personal invitation?   This is what I hope my response will be.  “Jesus, I thank you and accept your invitation to follow you.  Although I am unsure of what lies ahead, I trust that you will lead me on righteous paths and keep me safe.  I choose to follow you, knowing there will be both joys and sorrows on my journey, but comforted in knowing you will always be at my side.”  I invite you to respond with an Amen!

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.”         Revelation 3:20

  1. Amen!
What a thought provoking “invitation” which I have sadly ignored many times. I am going to work on changing that.
    Thank you, Donna. Beautiful!
