I remember visiting the Luray Caverns, located in the Shenandoah mountains of Virginia as a young girl, with my parents. Many years later, I returned to that area with my husband and, again, took the tour of these amazing caverns. The guided tour we travelled has lighted pathways, illuminating our way so we could all witness the “cathedral-sized rooms with some ceilings as much as 10 stories high, withtowering stone formations of stalactites and stalagmites.” But without the artificial lighting all around us, these cold, underground caverns would hold only darkness, not all the beauty that I was experiencing around me. During one part of the tour, I witnessed what it would be like if we had no light, as our tour guide turned off the lighting in one of the rooms. No light, not even peeking out from the smallest corner. I panicked a little – what if the lights don’t come on? How will we find our way out? When the lights finally did come on after what seemed an eternity, my calmness returned. There are many times in our lives that we feel we are in darkness – that our lives are void of hope. Light is the one thing that can give us calm and hope in better days to come. Can you recall a time (or maybe it’s right now) when you were trying to look for that small flicker of light in your day? How do you and I find the light? Many times, it’s not as easy as flipping on the light switch in a room. But is it? Our hope and our light can only come from Jesus. Artificial light has been created by man, but the light of our Jesus will never die. Here are some of my suggestions to find light in your life right now: Pick up a bible or search on your computer/phone for scriptures; Read a book about a saint or person that has overcome adversity; pull out a piece of paper and make a list of all the things for which you are thankful; call a friend/acquaintance who you trust and admire for their faith; think of one thing you could do for someone else in need. I could go on, but you get the idea. If a person is in darkness, they need to move – move towards the light of hope and love. Nothing happens if we stay in darkness; and trust me, the light is before you for all to see. It’s Jesus, He is the light of the world. If you already stand in the warm glow of Jesus’ light, look today for a reason to bring that light to others. It is our mission – it is our quest every day.
“You Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.” Psalms 18:28
