Water is necessary for our survival. It hydrates us, it cleanses us, and thankfully refreshes us on those hot summer days. I am happiest when I’m by the water; and living in Florida, it was definitely a good choice with the ocean, intra-coastal waterway, rivers, and lakes all within a short drive. Growing up, I remember our family had a small above ground pool in our backyard, which my father would put together and break back down every year. What a grand day that was when he started the tedious process of assembling our pool – the first sign of summer! All during the summer months, since we had no air conditioning, the family would spend many hours enjoying the refreshing waters of our pool (which seemed huge to me at that age). Even in the dark of night, many times it helped us sleep better after we enjoyed a “midnight” swim. Now that I am living in the glorious, sunny State of Florida, my husband and I never take for granted our beach days, where we love to spend time in the cool ocean waters. The ocean not only refreshes us from the hot outside temperatures, but also it refreshes our souls. Isn’t that true when it comes to Jesus? His promise of life-giving water, when He encounters the woman with her jug at the well, refers not to her physical thirst, but a thirst that can only be quenched by following Him. Following Jesus IS what truly satisfies our thirst. Like physical water, it cleanses us and makes us new. So, the next time you dip your toes, or your whole self, in the ocean waters or even while taking a refreshing shower after being outside, feel the Holy Spirit pouring down on you. Let’s never take for granted Jesus’ water that will refresh us more than all the worldly temptations we think will satisfy us. I pray that you will leave your jug at the well and continue to quench and refresh yourself with Jesus by your side.
“Jesus answered and said to her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink’, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” John 4:10
