How many things can you think of that sparkle? It may be the sequins neatly sewn on your daughter’s princess Halloween costume or maybe it’s the sparkle you see in the eyes of someone that loves you. The word sparkle brings to me both new memories being made and old ones that I cherish. New memories – as I look out on our small lake behind our new house and watch the sparkles coming off the water as the sun begins a new day. I am witnessing what, to me, looks like thousands of glistening diamonds that I could just reach out and touch. The old, cherished memory, reflecting on the diamonds dancing before me, was a young man of only 20 that slipped that engagement ring on my finger. Oh, how it did sparkle! I couldn’t wait to announce to everyone (even though we both had been dreaming and talking of getting married) that it was official. It seems like only yesterday, as I recall that definite sparkle in my boyfriend’s eyes when he asked me to marry him. And of course, I answered a resounding “Yes!” One such sparkle, however, that should never outshine even a diamond ring is our relationship with Jesus. When we approach the altar to receive communion, does He hear our resounding “Yes” to Him each time? That’s it! Our sparkle is us responding to Jesus. I stop and put myself into the scene, with Jesus leading ME up to the mountain top, like He did with Peter, James, and John. I’m standing alone with Him in total silence, just watching and wondering why I am here. Is He going to speak more words of wisdom or perform another miracle? Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine what happened next, as he was transfigured into sparkling white. It was so bright I had to look away. What did this all mean except the radiated light Jesus was to tell me how much He loves you and me. Even the sparkle off my beautiful lake or from the love exchanged from a diamond ring, cannot match the sparkle in God’s eyes that He has for us till the end of time.
“And He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.” Matthew 17:2
