The much-used quote that comes to mind is, “If I didn’t have bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.” Not very positive, is it? Unfortunately, many people believe this when it comes to “feeling down on their luck.” That’s me, when I take a chance at gambling.
Believe me, I’m definitely not your high roller type! I recall sitting in a casino with $20 worth of chips in my hands and a little anxious to try my luck at the slot machine. I wanted to feel lucky, hoping I would hit it big with my $20 investment. However, in a manner of minutes (it could have been quicker), my hopes were dashed. My hands even had that familiar clammy feeling whenever I’ve made similar previous attempts, most likely because I am confident that the money won’t remain in my hands for long.
But luck doesn’t come into play when it comes to rolling the dice for Jesus. I’m sure you wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the word luck doesn’t even show up in scripture. It wasn’t luck that you were born. It isn’t a matter of being lucky that you opened your eyes every morning. It wasn’t even luck that you said yes to following Jesus. I would call it all divine providence. A clearer definition would be “God’s loving and active governance over all creation, guiding it towards its ultimate perfection.” God does not sit back, rolling the dice to just see what happens to you and me. You didn’t happen by chance; and our life on this earth, that He created, can only be described as divine. Maybe that’s the better word to pray on this week – divine. It’s not by being lucky that gets us through each day. The word divine’s definition is “of, from, or like God.” I have to say I don’t believe God controls where the dice land in or not in my favor or even that I was “lucky” when the traffic light turns green when I’m in a hurry. I do believe that it was divine providence when my word that began as lucky turned into something much more beautiful and meaningful.
I pray that your week is full of God’s divine providence and that you use that knowledge to feel blessed you are always in His care.
“seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.” 2 Peter 1:3.
