I love watching baking shows on television. Just ask my husband! I don’t consider myself an award-winning baker (not even close), but I’m fascinated by how the contestants create such amazing, mouth-watering desserts, along with the pressure of time constraints. Have they memorized their recipes ahead of time, because baking to me is an exact science when it comes to measurements of the ingredients. From experience I know that not paying attention to the instructions almost always guarantees your cake or other baked goods to be a flop.
I know whenever I am creating a dish, I’m totally lost without my written recipe close at hand. And throughout my baking process I find myself reading that recipe constantly while combining all the ingredients, making sure nothing is left out and added in the correct order. Again, if not, my creation is doomed to be a disaster.
Maybe some bakers are confident enough that they don’t need to follow a recipe. “I can do it on my own”, they may proclaim.
Such is the case when it comes to our life journey. What recipe do we follow then? Does someone know the magic ingredients or maybe we should just wing it? There is another choice, though – choosing the first and best followed recipe for success that was written approximately 3,400 to 3,500 years ago. What is this magic recipe, you ask? It’s the only recipe that I believe is tried and true, The Ten Commandments, written by God himself. It was so important that His words were burned into stone tablets for His people to follow then and even so today.
There are only ten main ingredients; but in this case, it doesn’t matter how we mix those ingredients, only that we don’t leave out or forget a single one. Some, like me, understand the importance of following God’s recipe to get to Heaven. Others we may encounter may scoff at us following a set of written rules that Christians know are meant for our soul’s success.
So, just like my need to repeatedly read the recipe for a baking masterpiece to rise properly, to taste amazing and finally enjoying the aroma when it’s pulled out of the oven, you and I should never take for granted the importance of reading God’s proven recipe for a successful result over and over again. I pray that you’ll open up His holy recipe this week, found in the Old Testament, Exodus 20:2-17 and also Deuteronomy 5:6-21. Then ask yourself, “How well am I following God’s recipe?”
“You shall walk in all the ways that the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you…” Deuteronomy 5:1-33
