Aroma

– It hit me!  My nose immediately recognized that familiar and pleasant aroma in the morning of bacon cooking in the kitchen.  You know what I mean, right?  But it doesn’t stop at bacon.  I could name hundreds of my favorite pleasing aromas that will bring a smile to my face, even on the gloomiest days.  Do we take for granted that these fragrances wake up our senses, many times helping us to recall past experiences?

The sweet smell of bacon sizzling in the pan takes me back in time to our camping days and my husband cooking up that delicacy on our portable stove when the air still had that morning chill.  I can even picture our campsite, our tent pitched in the small, wooded area and recalling when I once was able to sleep comfortably on the ground in our cozy sleeping bags.  Memories also come flooding in when I pull up close to one of my favorite flowers, the hyacinth.  I picture our many trips to Longwood Gardens, that always entertained us with light and flower displays.  No matter the season, I would always bend my head down, breathing through my nose all the sweet aromas God had to offer.

What a gift we were given by having the ability to experience a variety of aromas from a simple glass of wine or the smell of freshly washed sheets on our bed.  Our noses also have the ability to detect or warn us of danger that our eyes may not be able to see, such as smoke from a fire, dangerous chemicals and even the smell of an approaching Spring storm.

Take some time to recall what particular aromas bring back memories for you?  I pray we appreciate and remember to thank God for allowing us to experience His gifts of our senses, especially the aromas He created all around us, both pleasant and unpleasant, allowing you and me to enjoy life to the fullest.  Remember, everything about creation is part of God’s plan.  He doesn’t make mistakes!

“Now thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and reveals through us the sweet aroma of his knowledge in every place.”
