I chose this one-line scripture because it is one of my favorites and has always spoken to me. The story of Samuel being called in the middle of the night awakens my senses and spirit every time I hear or read it.
It may be because, although I hate to admit it, my listening skills may sometimes fall short. That’s evident, when my husband gets frustrated with me when trying to relay information or is asking a question (I guess he’s expecting a response) or reading something of interest. It usually takes 3 times for me to finally hear completely what he’s saying (so he says). The first time he speaks, my mind is usually somewhere else; then after he repeats himself, I may only pick up the gist of his words. But after the third time, I finally grasp what he’s asking or relating to me. And, having my hearing checked, too, has definitely been a topic of conversation.
That’s why, when I read this scripture verse, I always ponder, “Am I listening to God when He speaks?” Or maybe I feel I’m understanding only parts of His words but not properly interpreting the whole message. Nevertheless, I am bothered and worry that He is calling me but I’m missing something. What if He’s speaking to you and me right now, even little hints about His desires for us, and we’re too busy? Or is it possible we may be a little frightened for where Jesus wants to direct our path?
Let’s face it, we live in a world surrounded by noise which is constantly competing with Heaven to drown out the conversation that is much more important to our growth in our life and ultimate salvation.
I hope this week, you’ll take some quiet time to read and allow your own heart to be awakened by Samuel’s story. Don’t ever doubt Jesus is calling you, whether it’s in the middle of the night or in the middle of your crazy day. What impresses me most is that Samuel keeps trying to discover who is calling for him and doesn’t give up. I pray that each of us will never give up and always be ready, willing and able to reply with those same humble words,
“Speak Lord for your servant is listening.”
