Meek – How do we follow Jesus’ example of meekness?

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

There are so many thoughts that come to mind when I read these holy words from Jesus.  What is He trying to tell us?  I’m thinking, who wants to be labeled as meek?  In our world today that’s a sign of weakness, isn’t it?  Can you imagine if your friends and family thought you were not able to show strength in the midst of daily battles – the meek one in the workplace, the quiet one who doesn’t speak up when there’s a problem?  We’re so busy trying to always be right – to have the last word in our daily battles – that we forget to ask the one big question that really matters – WWJD.  What would Jesus do?  That says it all for me.  Jesus would say, “I’m sorry.”  Jesus would say, “It’s not important that I’m right.”  Jesus would say, “I come to do my Father’s will.”  If we all took a few seconds when our daily battle armor wants to come on, to ask Jesus what He would do in the situation, maybe we would do a better job at “inheriting the earth.”   I never really understood the meaning of “shall inherit the earth?”   Maybe it means if we take more time to ask WWJD, our daily life would be much different.  We would, in fact, be stronger in our faith by being meek, humble, grateful and giving God all the glory.  We would be focused on what’s more important than winning our battles, ones that aren’t important in the heavenly world.  There are so many gifts He has bestowed on us, every single day.  That, alone, should humble us!  I am always inspired when reading stories about the saints, which is a great reminder of true meekness and surrender.  Through their admittance of their lowliness, they knew they could do nothing without Christ by their side, fighting their battles for them.  Jesus gives us all the strength we need!  I don’t know about you, but I forget that instead of trying to be everything, all Jesus wants me to believe in is his power and truly surrender to Him.  Let’s take time, especially during this Lent, to ask WWJD.    In the stillness He will answer you, and your inheritance, your reward, will be truly felt in your soul.

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
