Experience

I should have done this a long time ago.  I guess I just assumed that everyone was doing it.  You know, the whole experience.  Now you’re thinking, “What is she talking about?”  I think I’ll leave you hanging for a bit.

You know, the word experience can be used in different ways and have different meanings.  It can used in the sentence, “I’m sorry, but you need more experience for this job position.”  That reminds me of the many times my husband heard that phrase spoken, right out of college, on so many job interviews before one company finally said, “You’re hired.”

Having an amazing experience is another way to interpret this word.  That also reminds me of the time I stepped onto the water taxi that would take us to our hotel in Venice, one of my dreams.  It was a surprise trip planned by my husband, a whole new experience.   As I soaked in the reality of where I was and witnessing the beauty all around me, my eyes welled up with tears of joy.  Both examples use the word experience as a noun.

But my purpose in using this word goes even deeper in meaning.  (I’m getting to my point.)  I decided to take a brief survey of the readers of From God’s Lips.  My question was, “Do you listen to the song that accompanies our word each week, included after the scripture passage?  I was surprised when some of the answers were, “There’s a song?”  When it comes to fully experiencing what Jesus and I are sharing each week, to walk closer with Him by taking some contemplative, quiet time, the song chosen is another way to heighten your experience and pulls the whole message together.

So, this week, listen to Jesus speaking to you.  He whispers softly, “Give me your time today to just be still and experience my love for you.  Grab your cup of coffee or tea in the quiet of the morning, or maybe it’s at the end of your busy day.  Pick your favorite place.  Maybe it’s that comfortable, cozy chair you love or maybe an outside garden or sanctuary where you feel at peace.  I’ll be there with you.  Quiet yourself and even use those modern headphones, if necessary, to block out the noise.”   He continues.  “Once you’re settled, get used to the silence, breathe and just focus on me and the message I’d like you to receive.  And, please, don’t miss listening to the song!  You’ll be renewed for the week by taking in the whole experience.”

I would love to hear your feedback on what you experience by including the music in your prayer time.  Was it more rewarding?  Did it help draw you in being in closer communion with Jesus?  I pray that it does.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”  John 3:16
