Vacation!

I added an exclamation point after this week’s word because it expresses the excitement when we’re planning our vacations, especially during these summer months.  It is that time of year.  School is in recess; the weather has warmed, (and in many parts heated up) and we are enjoying the longer hours of daylight.  Going on vacation is a way to take a break from our everyday routines and leave all the stresses of life behind, even if it’s just for a short time.

I would have a difficult time recalling every single vacation, even if it was one day getaways that I enjoyed with my husband, and so many  times together with both family and good friends through the years.  I do know that each one was full of quality time away from work; and a smile comes to my face thinking of all the good belly laughs, delicious meals shared and stories that will always be close to my heart.  But unfortunately, vacations end and all our stresses are there waiting for us when we return home.  What do we do?  Should we go back to our same routines?

I know, the many times (even a day or two before we headed home) just the thought of returning to my work routine changed my mood and, I must confess, I was not pleasant to be around.  I just wanted to get that same feeling of rest and calmness to return.  Maybe you have felt the same way, even hoping there was a magic wand, or you could just click your heels together.

You and I may not have a magic wand, but we do have something better – Jesus.  One of my daily routines now is my time in the morning with Him.  I’m not a creature of habit, but I find taking the time to begin my day by reading some scripture and listening to or reading various reflections, starts my day with a more positive outlook, gives me a spring in my step (and attitude) – almost like a mini retreat or vacation.

I know it’s not easy for everyone to carve out that time in the morning, with daily responsibilities and demands.  The fact that I am now retired gives me more freedom to stay still with Jesus.  Even by choosing one short inspirational song (a perfect one follows), searching and reading one short scripture, or maybe taking one moment to thank Jesus for opening your eyes up today can change everything.  Vacations can give us a much-needed rest, but you don’t need to lose your perspective once you return “to duty”.

It’s funny, we’re all excited and good planners on mapping out time for a getaway, so let’s put as much love into planning a mini vacation with Jesus each day.  Even just sitting in stillness for five minutes, you can surround yourself in God’s beauty in your mind and be thankful.  I pray you’ll give it a try.

“Jesus, I am blessed to be in stillness with you, as I begin my day.  Know that I am grateful for all the beauty you bestow on me and the times of rest from the stresses of this world.  Keep me in your loving presence throughout this day.”   Amen

“Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee.  And he went up on the mountain and sat down there.”  Matthew 15:29
