Heroes

“A hero is someone who …”  What attributes would you attached to complete that sentence?  I thought this word was appropriate, especially since we just celebrated Memorial Day and with the approach of our country’s 250th birthday next month.   I’m confident that each generation would most likely complete the above sentence differently, choosing why their hero was deemed worthy to hold that title.  Our modern-day heroes that are revered probably include well-known celebrities, rock stars and possibly people of great wealth or notoriety for being rich, exciting and inspiring.  So, what is a true hero?

Earlier this year, my husband, our cousin from England and I toured the Kennedy Space Center in Port Canaveral, Florida.  One of the buildings was dedicated to “Heroes and Legends,” honoring all those that had made sacrifices and paved the way in the area of space exploration.  If we look back on history, there are so many heroes that have gone before us, allowing us to enjoy health, happiness, and most of all freedom that many times we take for granted.  However, during our tour of the Space Center, a variety of words were inscribed on the wall that totally captured the true attributes that are needed to properly hold that title.

As my eyes gazed around the room, taking in each word, such as passionate, curious, tenacious, and so on, only one picture came to my mind – Jesus.  Don’t get me wrong, there have been heroes throughout history, including current day, that deserve that description of themselves.  But why is the One that is best fitting not foremost on the list to emulate and whenever His name is spoken?  Jesus is a hero above all others before and after Him.  I choose Jesus as my hero above all.  I am also thankful for all those that gave up so much in the name of Jesus over the centuries, spreading His teachings of love, forgiveness, compassion and strength, many times sacrificing their own personal freedoms and lives.

As the 4th of July approaches, let us celebrate the true heroes that have died for you and me.  I pray Jesus Christ is at the top of your list too!

“Thank you Jesus for giving up your life for me.  You will always be a hero in my eyes and pray that others will embrace your teachings, your words and the only way.”  Amen

“Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous.  Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”  Joshua 1:9
